Frédéric D'ursel / violin

Frédéric d'Ursel studied violin under Edith Volckaert and later under Philippe Hirshhorn. He attended various short courses, such as Tanglewood, and played in several orchestras under well-known conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Eiji Oue, Léon Fleisher, Colin Davis, Christopher Hogwood, Reinbert de Leeuw and Antonio Pappano. As a chamber musician he followed master classes with members of the Alban Berg quartet.
Frédéric d'Ursel divides his musical life between chamber music, recitals and teaching young violinists. He is a founder member of Oxalys and since 2002 has formed a duo with the pianist Jean Michel Van Craenem, with whom he regularly gives recitals. Their choice of music is eclectic, ranging from classical to modern. Their repertoire includes classical sonatas such as those of Beethoven and Schubert, and music by Respighi, Janecek and Schnittke. He tries to pass on his musical enthusiasm to students at the Royal Music Conservatory in Brussels, where he is assistant to the violin teacher Véronique Bogaerts. He also regularly gives master classes in chamber music.
